One Planet Agriculture – A Soil Association Campaign for the 21st Century

Please support our One Planet Agriculture Campaign – an initiative of such importance that it should become a defining feature of the Soil Association's work over the next decade and enable us to address the combined threats of climate change and fossil fuel depletion.

Future generations will look back with incredulity at the way in which, over the last 100 years, we have squandered the accumulated energy capital of millions of years and, in doing so, may have brought ourselves to the brink of social and ecological catastrophe. The sheer scale of the challenge that confronts us can at times feel overwhelming. But there is a positive way forward, working from the ground up and focusing on three key issues – food security, relocalisation and sustainable organic farming.

This is the basis of our One Planet Agriculture Campaign. With your engagement and support, our aim is to transform food production and distribution in a way that will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels whilst at the same time improving the quality of our lives. By working together we can not only survive the hazards ahead but also create a better, more sustainable way of living for future generations.

We want to invest £5 million over the next five years to deliver this vital programme of work and need to raise half a million pounds to launch the key elements:
  • One Planet Agriculture awareness campaign: A series of events including international and national conferences, public meetings and seminars supported by extensive media coverage promoting new models for sustainable food based on the 'Soil not Oil' principle.
  • Rebuilding sustainable food and farming communities: Developing new models for sustainable living such as 'Transition Towns' by working at a local level to prepare communities, towns and cities to reduce their food and farming footprint and build a more secure future for their citizens.
  • Building a new food culture - the 'great reskilling': Enhancing the cultural status and expertise of all those involved in the greatest industry on Earth - the production of food. Using apprenticeships, master classes and other education and training courses we will engage existing producers and attract the next generation into food and farming professions.
But time is short and the need is urgent – it will take at least a decade if we are to prepare adequately for the challenges ahead so we need to start immediately.

This is one of those moments when a serious and organised effort from the grassroots of our movement may prove critical in preparing us for an uncertain future. Whatever you can give, your support would be hugely appreciated.

Increase the value of your donation by nearly a third - at no extra cost to you. Simply authorise us to claim back the tax on your donation.

If you are a UK tax payer tick this box if you agree to the Soil Association claiming tax on all your donations. We will then treat all your donations as 'gift' donations.

I understand that to tick the box above I should be paying an amount of income tax and/or capital gains at least equal to the tax the charity reclaims on my donations in the tax year (currently 28p for each £1 you give).
