Ropes and nets in the sea quickly become coated in natural biofouling

Antifoulants

Copper based antifoulants are frequently used on non-organic fish farms to prevent the build-up of fouling marine life which rapidly colonise any surfaces in the marine environment - in this case the net pens used to hold fish. These toxic antifoulants are not permitted on organic farms where the fouling organisms must be dealt with by more frequent cleaning of the nets.
